It sounds very European to refer to a vacation as a holiday but did you know that the very first Holiday Inn was opened right here in Memphis in 1952? The hotel was located at 4941 Summer Avenue and at the time, Summer Avenue was the main road to and from Nashville (I guess it took a little longer to get to the Music City back then). As the years went on, Holiday Inns opened up all over the world. Eventually, the original one in Memphis was sold and became the Royal Oaks Motel. The building was torn down in 1994 and the lot is now part of the Family Funeral Care property, holiday inn official website though there is a historic marker to denote the location.
Since this is the 60th anniversary of the hotel chain's holiday inn official website beginnings, Holiday Inn is holding a special giveaway in honor of the occasion. They are giving away 60 free room nights per day during the month of August.
