The reason tourist come to Virginia Beach is the beach, not a rock concert or a basketball game. I've lived here for most of my life and miss the days when Virginia Beach belonged to the locals. Now, all we focus on is the tourist. To tell you the truth, if I wanted to vacation at a beach, I would go to any beach other than Virginia Beach. That hurts because I love Virginia Beach, but we've wasted so much time on arenas for a team we don't want, and rails that go nowhere, that we've forgotten to fix why we want the tourist. The beach. Put the Arena in Suffolk, they have plenty of room, and if I want to see a game/concert, I'll go there. Finally, I think the Amphitheater does a great job for concerts.
Virginia Beach is doing a very good job of marketing the Virginia Beach oceanfront during the off season. Weekends when they have events like the Shamrock Marathon or Polar Plunge are very crowded. They are weekend long events that fill hotel rooms and restaraunts. Yes, they could use more events like those. And if you go down there on a weekday its is desolate. Adding a large concert venue that attracts people to the oceanfront what be yet another important piece to the marketing puzzle. Having an NBA team would be the icing on the cake.
While the outdoor venue is nice during the summer and tourist months, a first class facility would allow the city to host top name headliners and events year round. It could also draw other events like home shows where a large open area for exhibiting is necessary

its the bridges and tunnels my man. Charlottesville is an hour off of 95 but books great shows of all caliber. The planners should figure on a spectacular arena location somewhere between Newtown Road and Stepney moscow hotel Lane. This is the smarter move because I believe that it will be a cold day in hell when the Tide rolls all the way to (ie) 21st St. Atlantic.
If it's going to be run like the Va Beach Ampitheater (Farm Bureau Live), then no one will want to go either. The nazi security, noise restrictions, and the arbitrary over-protective nanny rules put in place made me stop going to any concerts there over 10yrs ago. Thankfully the Portsmouth Ampitheater is running more shows now. A much more relaxed enjoyable atmosphere. Most artists that have played the VB amptitheater, no longer want to play in VB. It's a dud town as far as the entertainment business is concerned. The city can't build an amazing venue and then expect people to enjoy themselves on the city council's close-minded terms.
