It can vary from site to site, and state to state. Generally the farther out the better, but there are some last minute deals that you can benefit from if your days and times are flexible. I prefer to set it in advance so I don t have to stress on whether or not I can get a flight but many like the last minute deals.

If Southwest flys from your airport sign up for DING at Southwest.com .. you pick your outbound and destination airport and they will send you daily deals that they have. Every day different so you might want to be prepared to buy at that very moment. Otherwise I would book right now and not wait too long.
DING by S/W airlines is a great option. Also there are some discount airlines that can offer great deals such as ALEGIANT AIR. If you find a ticket that works for you i recommend waiting until an odd time to purchase it like in the middle of the night, most people get their tickets during the day or evening so prices can be a touch higher then.
