Lynda Okerson, a first grade teacher from Cullen Elementary School was one of sixteen Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year honored at a ceremony celebrating education excellence, the Los Angeles County Superintendent discount tickets to disney world of Schools announced Saturday.
The 16 were selected from a field of 71 teachers who participated in the 31st Annual Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year competition. All participants had been recently selected as teacher of the year by their respective school districts.
They come from a diversity of school locales, including Arcadia, Covina, Culver City, Glendora, Lakewood, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Santa Fe Springs, Manhattan Beach, Hawthorne, Monrovia, Diamond Bar and South Pasadena.
"Lynda is an exemplary teacher who challenges her students to strive for excellence and persevere through those challenges to achieve," said Cullen Principal Cheryl Bonner in a statement. "Yearly, she builds a community of learners who, in the safe and nurturing environment of her classroom, can safely take risks and succeed in their learning. The county competition, overseen by the county Office of Education, is the largest competition of its kind in the state and nation.
