Although a bill to allow more bed and breakfasts on the Hawaiian island of Oahu failed to pass recently, a new system put in place on the island of Maui seems to be working well. According to an article in The Maui News , over the past year the local planning department "has processed and approved more than twice as many permits for the rentals as it did in the previous 11 years." The new law caps the number of B&Bs on Maui at 400; so far in 2009, 61 applications have been submitted and 33 have been approved.
