Recently I headed down to Southampton to see my first Holland America ship. I was excited to see the ship as I had heard lots of good things about them. A few of my colleagues have sailed with Holland America and had made the comparison to Cunard.
First impression: Wow! You could certainly tell that it was an American ship with a grand lobby and staircase to greet you. The décor was contemporary but not too over the top like some of the Celebrity ships can be. Holland America class themselves as 5* cruising and the feel of the ship certainly lived up to expectation.
I found the ship quite quirky with a green waterfall of glass squares in the Atrium and the dining room was spectacular with flower lamp shades lining the ceiling. They had decorated the dining room with an Olympic theme and it really did look spectacular with flags everywhere. What made it extra special for me was that there was a band area in the dining room making your evening more enjoyable!
Unfortunately we headed onto the ship mid sailing so did not get to see any of the cabins. I did notice that there were a lot of Americans on board. Maybe it's because the ship was repositioning from the US however I was quite surprised.
The theatre was fantastic! Plenty charming accommodation florence of seats and not many obstructions. Luckily when we went into the theatre they were rehearsing for the evening show and it was fantastic! In all honesty I wish I could have stayed on board to see the rest.
Now to my favourite part…the food! I found the service of the food to be a little slow compared to other cruise lines however I didn't feel as if I was rushing like you are on some of the other lines. The food was great and everything was cooked extremely well.
