Had to use a North American travel agency and send forign exchange out to do so. The GOL ticket was 3 times the price of the AA ticket for a similiar flight on almost a identical plane. So price becomes a big issue for increasing tourism from South America. It ain t going to happen in a big way. Lots of money being given to Gol by the Government that should be going to AA. And price is what it is all about today. Have a look at the Dominican Republic 5 airports and with over 7 million arrivals. BGI with one airport and just over 2 million arrivals ranks 8th in arrivals in the Caribbean market. There are some much bigger structual problems to deal with. High costs in Barbados cn only sustain the tourism product if the product itself is 5 star all the way. A national wakeup is needed.
It looks to me that Barbados has brought the tourism blues on itself in many ways. Could the airfare be part of its downfall? Not too long ago I was talking to my travel agent who I have been dealing with since the early 80 s about airfares. We touched on airfares to the Caribbean. He pointed out that airfares to BGI is one of the most expensive, it is because panama city beach vacation rentals of the very high added taxes, misc fees that BGI plugs on.
