Made a point of visiting Uncle Billys twice, liked it so much the first time. Had 6 house brews to go along with 6 guest taps. My favorites of their brews was the Agave Wit and the Thick Black Smoke, baton rouge tour guides a dark lager with a great smoky flavor. Good compliment to the meat heavy menu. Basically it's 8 types of BBQ'd meat and ten sides to choose from in any combo and amount you want. Excellent Que! Big outdoor patio with live music and roll up doors in the bar area when the weather cooperates. Big downside is the parking ,or lack thereof. Thay do have a shuttle and plans for a parking garage in the soon-to-be-finished condo complex are in the works. Put this one on your list for sure. And hang around the area for the Congress Ave. bat swarm.
These guys are surprisingly inventive for a relatively new brewery. The pecan porter is especially nice for something a little different. As not a huge hop head, I like that their pale ale is maltier than normal. And while not terribly bold, their wit is pretty nice, especially compared to local alternatives.
I was able to get a tour of this microbrewery on 11/9/08 and had the following brews; Wit 5.1%, Pale Ale 5.6%, IPA 6.8% and Pecan Porter6.5%. Brewer and owner Kevin Brand has a very nice facility in South Austin. Currently he has 3 30 barrel fermenters with plenty of room for more. Eventually he plans on bottling his brews with the help of assistant brewer Nate Seale. But they don't have a bottling line at this time. Currently this is a two man system with Nate handling many of the deliveries to local beer bars. So far they are not delivering outside of the 512 area code, but we can expect that within a year or so depending on how the business baton rouge tour guides does. Pint glasses are available for $5 along with hats and t-shirts for $10. No plans for organized tours at this time, but you can call and schedule an appointment. Tours are preferably during normal business hours of 9 - 5 Monday through Friday. Good luck to Austin's newest brewery
I had the Pale Ale at Uncle Billy's and was disappointed. There wasn't a lot of hop aroma and the flavor just seemed kind of . . . simple. Uncle Billy's Ax Handle Pale Ale just has a lot more going on.
I had my first beer from this new Austin brewery, the pale ale, which was a guest beer at Uncle Billy's Brew & Que. This is a solid interpretation of an American pale ale. I expect that other Texas pubcrawlers will soon weigh in on the other beers from (512), which at this time also include an IPA and a wit.
