Whew! Just got a quote on repair of our axle on the Tin Lizzy 1969-1970 Fleetwood Prowler 19ft travel trailer. Just want to know if anyone has some experience with this type of repair on a good ole RV that we love and continue to restore. They are telling us that we need to change from a 4-bolt axle to a five bolt axle to the tune of $1300.00 This includes new tires-which is stinky as we have three new tires including the spare. Thanks in advance for your reponse!
Hi Lynn! What needs repair on your existing axle? Would help to know to answer your question. car rental companies in orlando Note that I saw several Prowlers in the wrecking yard north of you in Fort Collins last summer. Can't imagine a used axle costing much more that $100 to $200 complete with rims. Single axles are very easy to replace if you have a few jacks, basic wrenches and some mechanical skills... or a few guys around who want to show off their "wrenching" skills!
Hi Pat, thanks for your reply and the great tip. The axle on the prowler was pretty bent when i bought her several years ago. This almost vintage needs "levelling" before the fridge works off or electricity. Anyway, back to the axle. My trailer guy wants to change the thing from four bolt-to five bolt. This recquires new tires. His thinking is the old split rim tire and hub design is not great. car rental companies in orlando He will also have to change the brake assembly, which is probably a good thing. I gave him the go ahead for about $900.00 This includes a weld job to the back bumper sheared during the same event which probably bent the axle as i am the second owner of the trailer. Any suggestions for a great and inexpensive PAINT shop that doesn't hang up when you hear the word travel trailer.
As to paint, why not do it yourself? There are several blogs and some paint it yourself tips in forums and blogs. Also, you could "theme" it like sisters on the fly do... see link on left of home page and some sisters vintage trailers who are members. car rental companies in orlando Really not that hard to do and fun!
That's the idea, Pat! I am working on a theme, and have an artist lined up. I would paint it myself if I thought I could do a great job! My old girl will look amazing with some paint. I will spend some time in the blogs and see how others are doing this! Thank you again for the forum, and the help. Lynn sotf #1441 (newbie)
Having had a couple car rental companies in orlando of trailers, car rental companies in orlando including a 28' 75 Boles Aero that I just sold, I will add my encouragement to switch over to 5 lug wheels. Also, most modern tire stores won't mess with splitrim wheels (cowards!), so new wheels designed for tubeless tires are a better choice.
