i am not saying that the entire situation is fair but look at it from the rental company's side. tho




Am I correct to assume that this fee is only charged if you pick up the car @ the airport? Is it charged if you don't pick it up @ the airport, but drop it off @ the airport? Is the 11.2% charged on the whole duration total?

actually jahmon, it is only if their office is at the airport. the rental agencies can drop you off and pick you up at the airport so far without the fee. some take you back to their office to complete the transaction on the way into aruba but that's no big deal. either way it is an average of 5-10 minutes and you are on your way.
it's a very tricky situation about car rentals here. first, it isn't really a tax. it is a fee imposed by the airport hotel reservation authority as many airports have for the right to have a concession on their property. i personally hotel reservation think it gives unfair advantage to those who do not have a kiosk at the airport but as i said, that is my opinion. but, since i am sitting in aruba right now and dropping my car off at the airport in about 6 hours i can tell you that i am not being charged a different rate than ever before nor does my rental company have a kiosk at the airport. i also know many people who have been take off airport hotel reservation property to complete the transaction.
one other personal opinion in this case. the cab drivers really have no reason to complain. before the fee was imposed they would not have gotten these fares and they still don't. these people who are renting hotel reservation cars were not going to take a cab before so the cab drivers really have no justification for their complaints.
i am not saying that the entire situation is fair but look at it from the rental company's side. those with kiosks at the airport have an advantage that anyone who hasn't rented their vehicle before coming to aruba will walk across the little hotel reservation airport street and directly into the kiosks to rent and those who did and picked by advertisements will pick those with kiosks because they see that they have offices at the airport. meanwhile the companies that have transacted hotel reservation business for years by meeting clients at the airport and doing the paperwork on site are losing hotel reservation customers. on the other hand, those that chose to keep their kiosks have a fee to pay that is possibly unfair. however, every airport that i know of does the same thing. it is a standard practice around the world.
Econo still has a kiosk at the airport. That is why they wont pick you up at the airport to take you to La Quinta. Their ad says they will pick you up at your hotel to take you to their La Quinta location, otherwise hotel reservation you can pick it up at the airport. The rental companies that DONT have a kiosk at the airport are very accomodating.

When I was in Aruba in late April/early May, they picked me up at the airport and took me to their new location which is less than 5 minutes away from the airport going toward town. When I returned the car I went to their location hotel reservation and they shuttled me back to the airport. Easy as can be and they will be doing the same again when we rent from them next month.
hi amy, in september (unless they change the court dates) there will be a hearing concerning this practice. the rental companies are not happy and are praying that things go their way. if they don't, then the process of pick up may change. hotel reservation you arrive at the right time, lol...right before the hearing so optima can still do it.

i agree with you amy. it will be a shame though if it comes to that. i feel sorry for all those involved in the car rental problem on both sides. the only winners are the officials charging hotel reservation the rental places the fees.

I rented a car in April.. No concession fee. I reserved the car last fall and asked about it. They told me there would be no problem.. They met me at the gate, took me to the pay lot and had the car there. We did the paperwork right there, he handed me a validation card for the gate and off we went.. They met me at the out going terminal and took the car.. No extra fees involved and they were great..I will rent from them again. And there were no problems hotel reservation with the car while I was there for the 2 weeks.
