The Southern California Regional Rail Authority's (SCRRA) 11-member board is preparing to hike fares between 5 and 9 percent across the system, which carries riders over a 512-mile network through Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties. Locally, Metrolink operates a line from San Bernardino to downtown Los Angeles, with stops in Pomona, Claremont, Covina, Baldwin Park, El Monte and Cal State Los Angeles. It also operates the Riverside Line, with stops in Industry and Montebello/Commerce, on its way to Union Station in downtown L.A.
Metrolink needs the extra cash to cover a $13 million revenue gap, which the agency says was caused mostly by a $4.7 million jump in fuel costs over the last two years. Other major costs listed on agency documents regarding the fair increase include: $3.2 million in higher labor costs and $2.5 million in retiree health care costs "which weren't previously budgeted Advertisement for."
Fenton announced gatwick luxury accommodation last week he was leaving the Southern California commuter rail agency and had accepted a position as CEO of Patriot Rail Corp., a railroad holding company based in Boca Raton, Fla. He said his leaving is not related to Metrolink's budget problems but rather a personal decision he made to be closer to his family. "Metrolink is in very good shape," he said.
"There will be a community meeting on this issue toward the end of the month. The issue has not yet been decided," said Tony Bell, spokesman for L.A. County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who sits on the SCRRA board of directors.
Esther Amado, 20, rides the train from Baldwin Park to her part-time job at National Community Renaissance, a developer and community services provider gatwick luxury accommodation in Rancho Cucamonga. Train fare costs her about $200 a month. A 9 percent increase would cost her about $18 more per month.
Daniel Cole of Baldwin Park takes the Metrolink to Cal State Los Angeles where he is working on a master's in social work. The returning student says the maximum increase will cost him about $75 more in transportation costs per year.
He also noted that Baldwin Park recently began charging to park at the Metrolink park-n-ride lot off Downing Avenue. Cole's master's thesis looks at barriers to full employment faced by former welfare recipients.
Transportation experts say Metrolink is more dependent on fares to keep it in the black than is Metro, which operates light-rail (Gold Line, Green Line, Red Line, etc.) and buses primarily through revenues from sales tax measures.
Average Metrolink weekday ridership is 42,000, according to a survey done in May 2011. The survey found that 90 percent of riders would have otherwise driven alone or car pooled; the system replaced an estimated 25,000 vehicle gatwick luxury accommodation trips a day.
