It s easy to write Craft Spells off as a band that has spent way too much time with New Order, the Wake and Sarah Records. And while that may indeed hotel rooms england be true, that doesn t change the fact that its members hotel rooms england can pen some damn catchy indie pop tunes. Following their 2011 debut, Idle Labor , the Cali quartet return with six more of those catchy tunes with their Gallery mini-release. While hardly a game-changer, the EP does show lead songwriter Justin Vallesteros and co. gaining some newfound confidence, stripping hotel rooms england away any previous awkwardness to reveal a more direct, in-your-face approach hotel rooms england to their melancholic guitar pop music.
Electronic-tinged kickoff Still Left with Me is especially effective with its get-stuck-in-your-head chorus, while Sun Trails brings Vallesteros s most convincing Bernard Sumner impression yet. If you still have a semi-clear memory of the 80s and no real desire to go back there, you ll likely want to pass this one by. But if you re up for some guilty pop pleasure, Gallery will hit the spot, musical redundancy be damned.
