TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection s (DEP) Green Lodging Program recently designated its 500th property, the Holiday Inn University Center in Gainesville, among 42 others, bringing the program total to 540 designated properties. The soaring number of designated facilities offers the eco-conscious traveler scores of choices when considering lodging accommodations in Florida this summer.
These 540 facilities are leaders in the lodging industry and prove that green is still growing in Florida, said DEP Director of Sustainable Initiatives Deas Bohn. The state s lodging industry serves theater tickets broadway shows more than 35 million guests annually and thanks to the commitment of the facilities, guests can choose from a wide variety of hotels, motels, bed breakfasts and even cabins that protect and preserve Florida s natural environment.
The Program's growth is largely attributed to Governor Charlie Crist's suite of 2007 executive orders aimed at reducing theater tickets broadway shows Florida's greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency and removing market barriers for renewable energy technologies such as solar and wind energy. Executive Order 07-126 theater tickets broadway shows required state agencies and departments under the direction of the Governor to contract for events only with hotels that had received the Florida Green Lodging Program.
Building on the executive orders, in June 2008, Governor Crist signed House Bill 7135, "The Energy, Climate Change, And Economic Security Act Of 2008", which expanded the Florida Green Lodging Program requirement to all state agencies. This comprehensive energy and economic development legislation also encompassed reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as encouraging investment in alternative and renewable energy technologies. DEP's Office of Sustainable Initiatives is comprised of three voluntary, non-regulatory programs that assist Florida industry and citizens in protecting the environment. The Clean Marina Program, the Clean Vessel Act grant program and the Florida Green Lodging Program offer a variety of services including consultations, speakers and workshops, all at no cost to citizens or organizations. The goal of the Sustainable Initiatives programs is to meet the needs of the present population without compromising resources for future generations.
