There's nothing better than a good tipple and a hearty meal in a warm pub on a cold winter's day. And as a lot of my research for Great Australian Pubs was done last winter, I think my knowledge about finding a quality pub in winter is second to none.
Almost every pub in Tassie has a fire blazing virtual tour companies in the hearth. In Hobart, you'll find darker ales on tap, Tasmanian whisky from the Lark Distillery, and gluhwein and hot soup on offer during winter if you pop in to Knopwood's Retreat at Salamanca Place. virtual tour companies What could be more warming? Knoppies, as the locals call it, is a welcoming place at any time, but seems even more so in winter. The small bar is usually crowded, there's a large open wood fire, and the whole place has a warm and intimate atmosphere.
Another Hobart pub that's hard to go past is the Shipwright's Arms (Shippies). It's a traditional English-style corner pub filled virtual tour companies with history. The front bar, built by a shipwright, features Tasmanian timbers and has log fires that keep it cosy in winter. I enjoyed eating in the bar by the fire, rather than the restaurant!
Back on the mainland, Victoria has some wonderfully cosy pubs. The Mitre Tavern , Melbourne's oldest pub, is like a little piece of olde England, with low ceilings, virtual tour companies open fires in winter, hunting prints and the odd deer's head on the wall. Tuck into a beef and Guinness pie in the bistro or head upstairs to the clubby steakhouse and grill where there's another fireplace.
If you fancy something virtual tour companies other than traditional pub fare to warm the cockles, the Old Fitzroy Hotel in Sydney's Woolloomooloo is the place to go. The Old Fitzroy is famous for its laksa, and steaming bowls of this fragrant and spicy soup continuously emerge from the kitchen. There are about a dozen different types of laksa on the menu, as well as other Asian fare (maybe some curried prawns or a beef redang) plus the usual steak, schnitzel or burgers. There's a fireplace in the downstairs bar, and they even supply marshmallows for toasting.
It may be near the beach, virtual tour companies but South Australia's Caledonian Inn at Robe is also a top spot on a wintry day. It has crackling open fires, low doorways and intimate virtual tour companies spaces that give it a great atmosphere. Have a drink in the historic front bar or snuggle up in a booth in the candlelit dining room. The menu has fresh local crayfish and in winter you'll find Coopers Stout among the brews on tap.
The Mundaring Weir Hotel , about 45 minutes from Perth's city centre, is a warm, inviting and rambling place, virtual tour companies with 20 fireplaces throughout the two-storey brick building so you'll virtual tour companies never be far from a fire in winter. 'We use about two tonnes of wood a week in winter,' says owner Jens Jorgensen. The large front bar leads to a lounge bar with a fireplace, and down stairs there's a ballroom-sized dining room. Everywhere you look there are antiques, artwork and collectibles.
