For those of you that have joined the Republicans in disparaging unions, this is exactly why you need them. This flight, the Southwest flight, remember Sully??? I was on a plane more than a decade ago that had an engine blow up after take-off. I thought I was going to die in those few seconds that the plane started to veer sideways and down. But the pilot steadied the plane and the flight crew prepared us for an emergency landing. They even took control of a passenger that freaked out, leaving his seat and racing toward the emergency exit. After we landed safely, I asked the pilot if he was scared. He replied that yes he was, but his emergency training kicked in without a second's thought. That is why unions are so important. Unions insured that pilots received united kingdom climate the training that is needed. Unions insure that pilots are well-paid and have reasonable flying schedules. Unions insure that there are 2 pilots in the cockpit and a large enough flight crew to protect passengers in case of an emergency. When Reagan destroyed united kingdom climate the air traffic control union, Republicans cheered... now look where that has gotten us. One controller in a tower, working such long back to back shifts united kingdom climate that they cannot stay awake. Plane maintenance is now subcontracted out to the lowest bidder. This is just the beginning.
Yes, indeed. I remember when flying was fun. Actual food was served, seats weren't so crammed together that my knees didn't have to rest on the seat in front of me. I also remember how expensive flying was. I have to ask, is it really necessary to have so many humans traveling so much in so many airplanes burning so much fuel? I'm a private united kingdom climate pilot who flies for fun, but nearly every time I'm up in the air I ask myself if this is necessary. It certainly is expensive. Having been to Europe and seeing united kingdom climate the rail system over there, I wonder why we can't have a decent rail system here. Distances. I miss good service and the pampering that are missing now.
While I appreciate the ethic, united kingdom climate defending unions & especially pilot's unions, some of what you say is skewed. Both the FAA & the Railroad Labor Act have huge influence on work rules, the right & ability to strike, contrast that with management united kingdom climate by lawyers & accountants. Since the Buffalo/Colgan disaster there have been new efforts to redefine FAA required work rules surrounding rest periods. This debate has been going on 50 (FIFTY) years!! Currently United/Continental have 2 contracts & both are being renegotiated. Continental starts counting the rest period from the time the plane parks, & not from the time the pilot's head hits the pillow. Some hotels are a long drive from the airport, so the actual rest is sometimes limited to less than 7 hours. That is just one example.
As union members go, these pilots are very interesting, they are highly educated, & often politically conservative. Still, they are paid by the hour & their work rules effect not just them, but hundreds of lives they are responsible united kingdom climate for.
Management is really pushing them in negotiations & it will be interesting to see this huge airline with a pilot strike. It is a long way off though some are ready. There was an enormous slowdown & lack of crew problem over Xmas (it was NOT "just" the weather).
talking with a pilot recently and he was talking about Airbus' fly by wire system. The Plane would spontaneously lock up and turn skyward then attempt to roll over a quick thinking copilot pulled the lever that turned the plane into landing mode and the plane stopped doing it. Airbus and the airline went thru every nut, bolt, server, wire, computer, every line of code, the sticks, solenoids, and from the nose to the tail. They never did figure out what caused the problem.
I was smoking in planes in 1987, so i i think its around united kingdom climate 1990, but 1st they went with the "smoking room" with was hilarious every time someone would pull the curtain , a big cloud of smoke would escape in the cabin, you would see the 1st 5 rows waiving their hands in disgust all in the same time...
Loss of a flight management computer with uncommanded lateral control inputs can make for a very exciting time in the flight united kingdom climate deck for the flight crew. With aircraft united kingdom climate so dependent on electronics united kingdom climate these days and fly by wire flight united kingdom climate controls, if the so-called black boxes fail, the pilots are just along for the ride as what happened in France some years ago on an air show flight and landed in the trees.
This is what deregulation gets you, aging planes packed united kingdom climate to the gills with overcharged passengers. As a travel agent, I would like to be able to pull up the age of the plane and date / status of last inspection when I make reservations. As the customer, you only get minimal info and minimal united kingdom climate service at a premium price from the airlines. When are travelers going to stand up and demand that the skies are safe!?
That's great info, and I will definitely check it out! Though, as a nervous flier anyway, I'm not sure I would be happy to see that the plane I'm on is over 20 years old, lol. Either way, it would still be awesome to pull this up as part of the flight info screen we have in our res system. I know I would choose my flights based on the equipment. Of course, they regularly change equipment at the last minute anyway.
The FAA Registry is a searchable public database that has information on all commercial united kingdom climate airliners certified to fly. Granted united kingdom climate you won't know what plane is going to be dispatched on routes in advance, but the database has tons of information -- including mfr date.
I will check that out. I was referring specifically to the process of purchasing airline tickets. united kingdom climate I would pay a little more to be on a recently inspected or newer plane. I just think it's something consumers should have a choice about, not that we really have any choices at all when it comes to air travel.
