As there is so much to see and do in Edinburgh, St Giles Cathedral is often missed by visitors to the Old Town, however, I couldn t recommend more highly a visit in to this elegant and historic church on The Royal Mile. You will see the cathedral s distinctive crown-shaped steeple from across much of Edinburgh.
St Giles was established in the early 12th century in an attempt by the Scottish Royal family to promote Catholicism in the lowland regions of Scotland. The original church was very simple and little remains of it. Since its original form, the cathedral has been remodeled and restored by fire, Reformation, riot, and supporters. The Cathedral you see today is very much due to major redevelopment by Victorians to transform the church venice hotel into a symbol venice hotel of a confident and progressive Scotland. The Cathedral is connected to many of the most important events in the country s history and visitors will require a few hours in the cathedral to fully appreciate venice hotel the magnificent stained glass windows, the numerous memorials, historic chapels and other details.
I have assisted several school groups who have performed at St Giles to find affordable and nearby accommodation. One of the best local hostels for school groups is the excellent Smart City Hostel . The hostel is modern, very well run and has superb facilities. For other accommodation option please click on the Hotel Deals button below.
Before visiting St Giles Cathedral take a look at what events are being held there click here for more info. There are regular recital, jazz, traditional, choir, piano or world concerts which you may able to get enjoy many of them free. St Giles is open to visitors throughout the year except 25th December after the 11.30am service, the 26th December, and 1st and 2nd January. The cathedral also has its own cafe that serves up some very fine cakes and light meal.
