We've all heard the old horror story of being prematurely declared dead, promptly popped into a coffin and swallowed by the Earth. There is something creepily frightening in imagining the crushing weight of the soil above you, or the dark heavy earth pressing down on the lid above. Suffocation, starvation, pure fear would have been your only consolation.
Maybe this would pass as a B-grade horror film, but the truth is far more bizarre than any filmmaker could conjure. So great was the fear of their family members missing their breathing chests, that the wealthier residents of Edinburgh had bells attached to strings snaking into the coffin, which eventually became cheap tickets flight search results all the rage amongst the fearful population. As if any more evidence were needed for the blood-curdling reality of the situation, found in one of the older cemeteries in the center of the city, 1 out of every 10 coffins-yes 10%-had deep, desperate scratches on the inside lids. It is said that the spirits of the tortured should under the headstones rise up and ring out ethereally over the cold, foggy graveyards. Or maybe, as here in the case of artist David Allen, advertise their pain in a more physical sense.
